Your Guide to: Travelling Costa Rica Coast to Coast

Why Go?

Costa Rica may cover just 0.03% of the world’s landmass, but it is home to an impressive 5% of the planet’s biodiversity. This means that one out of every 20 animal species on Earth can be found in Costa Rica. This remarkable fact is just one of the many reasons why visiting Costa Rica is an experience that will be cherished!

Embark on an exhilarating 250km journey across one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, traveling from the Pacific to the Caribbean by mountain bike, on foot, by raft, and kayak. This adventure is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a deep dive into the ecological wonders of Costa Rica. Along the way, you’ll encounter exotic wildlife, traverse lush rainforests, climb majestic mountains, and navigate exciting rivers. Experience the raw, unspoiled beauty of nature and the warm hospitality of local communities on this unforgettable adventure.

Benefits of Small Group Travel

Small group travel enchances your overall experience in this biodiverse paradise and with remote communities. Travelling with a small group enables more personalised and flexible itineraries, allowing you to stop and chat with locals while cycling, observe coffee bean harvesting during trekking through rural farmlands, or the local way of life whilst in a small village at the end of the day. It also fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared adventure, making it easier to connect with your fellow adventure buddies. Plus smaller groups can access remote and less-visited areas, providing a more intimate and immersive encounter with Costa Rica’s stunning landscapes and chances to witness exotic wildlife. Additionally, it ensures a lower environmental impact, aligning perfectly with the sustainable travel ethos that both Costa Rica and Adventurous Ewe champions.

When to Go

The ideal times to undertake this coast-to-coast challenge are during Costa Rica’s dry season from December to April. This period boasts plenty of sunshine, making it an ideal time for wildlife-spotting and your adventures activities of cycling, hiking, kayaking and white water rafting. Here at Adventurous Ewe we also like to offer other times of the year to experience this incredible country and help support local communities throughout the year. Please see below what you can expect during the months that we visit:

January is typically warm and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 27-29°C during the day and the low 22-24°C at night. Coastal areas tend to be more humid, while the central valley has a more mild climate. January is considered thedry season in many parts of the country, although rain is still possible in some regions.

February weather is generally similar to January, with warm and humid conditions prevailing throughout the country. The dry season continues in most parts, although some areas may experience occasional rain showers. Overall, February is a great time to visit if you wish to enjoy warm and tropical weather.

March is warm and humid, with average temperatures ranging from the 27-30°C during the day and 22-24°C at night. This is the transition period between the dry season and the rainy season, so some parts of the country may experience occasional rain showers, while other areas remain relatively dry. Coastal regions tend to be more humid, while the central valley has a milder climate.

April sees the shift to the start of the rainy season in many parts of the country. Average temperatures range from 27-30°C during the day and 22-24°C at night. Coastal regions tend to be more humid. Rain is more frequent in April, especially in the afternoons, so you should be prepared for some wet weather. However, it is still possible to have sunny and warm days as well.

May is warm and humid, with average temperatures similar to April. This is the heart of the rainy season in many parts of the country, so you should expect frequent rain, especially in the afternoons. Despite the rain, May is the best time to visit Costa Rica if you enjoy lush and green landscapes.

June, July & August mark the peak of the rainy season in many parts of the country, bringing very heavy rains. Consequently, we suspend our Coast to Coast adventure during these months for safety reasons, particularly concerning the white-water rafting. Also, keep in mind that July and August are typical holiday months for European travellers, which attracts higher prices and more crowds.

September marks the transition between the rainy season and the dry season. This means that you can expect a mix of sunny and warm days, as well as occasional rain showers. Average temperatures range from 27-30°C during the day and 22-24°C at night. September is a great time to visit if you enjoy warm and tropical weather and are not bothered by the occasional rain shower. Plus September and October offer an abundance of gorgeous green foliage to match the ever exciting animal encounters.

October is the beginning of the dry season, which is the best times to visit many parts of the country, as you can expect sunny and warm weather, with occasional rain showers. Plus you’re visiting just before the high season which usually starts in December.

November is the heart of the dry season in many parts of the country, so expect mostly sunny and warm weather, with occasional rain showers. Just like October, this is a perfect month to avoid the crowds that are coming in in December.

December expect mostly sunny and warm weather, with occasional rain showers. December can be a great time to visit Costa Rica if you enjoy warm and tropical weather, as well as for outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, kayaking, rafting, surfing, and wildlife viewing. This is a peak travel season.

2. When to Go

Choosing the perfect time to embark on the Dalai Lama Himalaya Trek can significantly enhance your experience, aligning with your personal preferences for weather and cultural engagement. Both May and October offer unique advantages as part of the spring and fall trekking seasons in the Himalayas. Here’s a closer look at what each month has to offer to help you decide when to take this incredible journey.

May: Springtime Splendour
  • Weather: May falls at the tail end of the spring season when the weather is mild and the days are generally warm, providing comfortable trekking conditions. The residual chill from winter has mostly dissipated, and the heat of summer hasn’t fully set in, offering an ideal climate for long treks.
  • Scenery: The landscape is vibrant with life during May. Trekking paths are framed by blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers, creating a spectacular display of colours. The forests and meadows are lush and green, adding to the visual feast that makes each step of the trek a photographic moment.
  • Cultural Vibrancy: May is a festive month in the Himalayan region, with local communities celebrating the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Participating in these local festivals can provide a deeper insight into the traditions and lifestyles making for a more immersive experience.
October: Autumnal Beauty
  • Weather: October is arguably one of the best months for trekking in the Himalayas, as the weather stabilises with less rainfall and clearer skies. The air is crisp and invigorating, perfect for high-altitude trekking. The visibility is often at its best, allowing for unobstructed views of the towering peaks.
  • Scenery: As the monsoon season ends, the landscape transforms with autumnal hues. The forests display a beautiful palette of oranges, reds, and yellows. This is also the time when the snow begins to dust the higher peaks, providing a stunning contrast against the blue autumn skies.
  • Cultural Depth: October coincides with some significant festivals, including Dashain and Diwali, depending on the lunar calendar. These festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm, marked by rituals, dances, and community gatherings that highlight the rich cultural heritage of the area.

Step into the Hidden Trails: Discover Japan’s Best Self-Guided Treks https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/step-into-the-hidden-trails-discover-japans-best-self-guided-treks/ Wed, 15 May 2024 12:11:00 +0000 https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/?p=14453

Step into the Hidden Trails: Discover Japan’s Best Self-Guided Treks

Explore Japan’s Majestic Paths: Kumano Kodo Kiiji’s Nakahechi Route and The Nakasendo Trail

Japan! A timeless country where ancient traditions seamlessly intertwine with modern life. A lesser-known fact about this enchanting island country is that over 70% of its terrain is mountainous. This vast and varied landscape invites you to explore it on foot, allowing you to traverse through the heart of Japan’s stunning scenery, delve deep into its rich culture, encounter historic temples steeped in centuries of highly revered traditions, and savour the flavors of fresh, local cuisine. We are thrilled to announce the launch of not one, but two new self-guided treks to this unique destination. Each route offers a unique glimpse into Japan’s heritage, breathtaking landscapes, the genuine hospitality of its people and some lesser-known hidden treasures.

Here’s our guide into two of the best self-guided treks waiting for you to explore.

The Kumano Kodo Kiiji’s Nakahechi Route: A Sacred Pilgrimage

The Kumano Kodo is a UNESCO designated network of pilgrimage paths that crisscross the diverse landscapes of Japan’s Kii Peninsula connecting ancient mountain shrines. These sacred routes, with a history spanning over a millennium, have been traversed by individuals from every stratum of society – from peasants and craftsmen to nobles and emperors – symbolising a journey accessible to all in pursuit of spiritual fulfilment. The trails stretch across majestic mountain ranges and meander through verdant valleys, peppered with quiet hamlets and bustling hot-spring towns famous for their rejuvenating waters.

Experience all of the best parts of the classic Nakahechi route. Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims who’ve been walking the routes between sacred shrines since the 10th century. Suitable for hiking enthusiasts who want to take in the spiritual atmosphere of a centuries-old pilgrimage route, and experience the homely hospitality of small inns along the way. Explore this route and be eligible for Dual Pilgrim certification!

Area: The Kii Peninsula points south, away from the great cities of Kyoto and Osaka, and is one of the most remote and mystical areas of Japan, despite its proximity. Long a place of pilgrimage, it is the site of the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano).

Best Time to Go: April – November (snow falls occasionally from December to March)

Duration: 6-day trek

Daily Hike Time: Approx 5.5 hours per day. Shortest day: approx 2 hours. Longest day: approx 8 – 9 hours

Daily Hike Distance: Average of 13.2km per day. Shortest day: 4.5km. Longest day: 24.4km

Elevation: 1,000m/3,000ft of ascent, though shorter options are available on day 3 of the itinerary. Some sections are quite steep, so a decent standard of fitness is necessary.

Highlights: Include enjoying a view of the Pacific Ocean from Ogumotorigoe Pass, exploring the lively Kii-Katsuura fishing port, visiting Hongu and Nachi Grand Shrines, and relaxing in onsen hot springs.

Who’s it for: For those drawn to the serene ambiance of an ancient pilgrimage route and who seek to embrace the warm, welcoming hospitality found in charming inns along the path.

Why Go?

The Nakahechi route of the Kumano Kodo trail network invites adventurers to tread paths that pilgrims have walked since the Heian Period. This route is not just a trek; it’s a journey back in time, surrounded by lush forests and the spirit of ancient Japan, walking in the footsteps of emperors. As you walk from shrine to shrine, the spiritual ambiance is heightened, with seeing all three stunning Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Kumano Hayatama Taisha.

This trail offers a blend of challenge and charm, with varying elevations and terrains that keep the body active and the spirit intrigued including both coastal and mountain paths. The route also serves as a stunning showcase of rural Japan, offering peaceful encounters with local life and traditions that have persisted through centuries. A visit to Kii-Katsuura at the end of the trip really rounds it off as an active fishing port with a lively early-morning fish market; you’ll see the food you eat as fresh as the day it’s caught!

Insider Scoop

There are thermal hot spring waters and baths that you can enjoy in the evenings at traditional inns along the Nakahechi route. We also recommend visiting the last ever black bamboo local artisan in Japan, learning how handcrafted bamboo is made. With our self-guided trip, both these experiences would be included!

The Nakasendo Trail: A Walk Through History

Referred to as the “Way of the Samurai”, this historic trail winds its way through the picturesque Japanese Alps, connecting Kyoto and Tokyo.

Area: Weaving through the mountains of central Japan, the historic Nakasendo Trail connected Kyoto and Edo-period Tokyo. This trail stretches 534 km and the villages along the way, known as juku, provided accommodation for weary travellers walking along this route dating back to the seventh century.

Best Time to Go: April to November

Duration: 5-day trek

Daily Hike Time: Approx 5 hours per day. Shortest day: approx 3 hours. Longest day: approx 6 hours

Daily Hike Distance: Average of 13.1km per day. Shortest day: 8.3km. Longest day: 18.4km

Elevation: Max 723m ascent and descent

Highlights: Include a visit to the historic and nationally treasured Matsumoto Castle, picturesque views of the Kiso Valley and Karuizawa, and bathing in the thermal waters of an onsen ryokan (hot spring inn).

Who’s it for: Anyone wanting a taste of what Japan was like when Samurai roamed the land centuries ago – who relish the idea of wandering leisurely through picturesque landscapes—encompassing rice paddies, quaint rural communities, forests, and historic villages—this journey offers a profound connection to a time-honored way of life.

Why Go?

In contrast, the Nakasendo Trail slices through the heart of Japan’s mainland from Kyoto to Tokyo, once a bustling network of post towns during the Edo Period. This route is steeped in history, where each step taken is the same cobblestone path that samurai’s and merchants once journeyed over. Take in the exquisitely preserved towns of Magome, Tsumago and Narai. Here, wooden inns share a warmth that remembers a time when travellers would relax over a steaming tea.

The Nakasendo Trail offers a more walked trek compared to the Kumano Kodo Route, with well-maintained paths and gradual ascents and descents that make it accessible for many. To round off the trip, stepping on the infamous bullet train to Tokyo at the end really is an experience in itself!

Insider Scoop

There is the opportunity to spend the night at a family-run minshuku in Tsumago or the nearby hamlet of Ō-Tsumago. A part of the cultural experience is enjoying a delicious home-cooked Japanese dinner and breakfast. We also recommend visiting one of Japan’s few remaining original castles, Matsumoto Castle, also called ‘Crow Castle’ due to its black exterior. With our self-guided trip, both these experiences would be included!

Choosing Your Path

The choice between the Kumano Kodo Kiiji’s Nakahechi Route and the Nakasendo Trail hinges on what you seek from your Japanese adventure. If your heart leans towards a spiritual quest through sacred forests and ancient rituals, the Kumano Kodo Kiiji’s Nakahechi Route will fulfil that need. But if you wish to step back into the bustling era of shoguns and Samurai while enjoying the ease of travel and historic towns, then the Nakasendo Trail calls for you.

Why Self-Guided?

Our self-guided trips are crafted for those who seek independence but appreciate a well-organised journey. Equipped with our mobile travel app, adventurers receive personalised, up-to-date day-by-day itineraries including maps, local insights, and essential trip information, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience. You’re also supported by our team in Kyōto if there is the need or support wanted.

For self-guided first timers we really focus on helping ensure you feel calm minded, secure and connected to fully embrace the experience –  where freedom meets detailed preparation.

Self-Guided Luggage Option 1: for Ease and Convenience

For ease and convenience you could just carry a light day pack and have your main luggage couriered along the trail. Firstly Takkyubin Courier which takes your main luggage to your final destination. Or secondly, Daily Luggage Transfer, this is available on all of the Kumano Kodo Trail and parts of the Nakasendo Trail where your luggage is transferred from village to village.

Self-Guided Luggage Option 2: Pack Smart, Hike Smart

The second option is carrying all your luggage in a backpack. This will be heavier as you’ll be carrying all in one and therefore we have some tips for that to keep your organised:

  • Pack Heavy Gear at the Bottom: For better balance and to minimise back strain, place denser items, such as your sleeping bag, at the bottom of your pack.
  • Use Colour-Coded Dry Bags for Organisation: Sort your kit into coloured dry bags. This method is efficient for finding items and ensures everything stays dry and organised.
  • Bring your complimentary Water-to-Go Bottle: supporting our commitment to sustainability and providing safe, fresh water throughout your journey.

Ready to Explore?

Both paths promise the joys of self-guided exploration, where freedom and discovery go hand-in-hand with every step. Whichever you choose, the journey will be a testament to the beauty and tradition of Japan, leaving you enriched and inspired.

We hope this glimpse into our self-guided treks inspires you to lace up your boots, embrace the detailed freedom our adventures offer, and venture into the heart of Japan. A focus on getting away from the crowds and into the real Japan. With the support of Adventurous Ewe, explore off-the-beaten-track Japan and focus on enjoying the exquisite regional cuisine, breathtaking scenery, and unforgettable moments you’ll collect on the way. Leave the rest to us.

Why Visit the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/why-visit-the-high-atlas-mountains-in-morocco/ Fri, 03 May 2024 07:41:34 +0000 https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/?p=14408 Why Visit the High Atlas Mountians in Morocco

Why Visit the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco?

Morocco – a name that evokes visions of bustling souks, aromatic spices, refreshing mint tea, and the expansive vistas of the Sahara Desert. Yet, for those seeking a deeper connection with the country’s rich traditions and authentic culture, the High Atlas Mountains await. Here, amidst North Africa’s most secluded and ancient villages, you can immerse yourself in the true essence of Moroccan life, far from the beaten path.

At Adventurous Ewe, we’ve had the privilege of exploring the High Atlas Mountains for over 15 years, forging bonds and friendships with local mountain communities that have grown into deep, familial connections. From local shopkeepers, to café owners, to taxi drivers and guesthouse staff. Alongside our local tour operator, who started their journey in adventure travel at the same time as us, we have grown together, building a network that feels like family. This deep-rooted connection enriches every journey we offer through these majestic landscapes. In 2024, we invite you to discover this unparalleled region where adventure meets heritage. The High Atlas not only offers breathtaking scenery—from the soaring peaks to the valleys in full bloom with cherry and almond orchards — it also provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich Berber culture and connect with the warm-hearted locals who welcome every visitor as if they were family. It’s not unusual to be invited in to someone’s house for a cup of freshly brewed tea and a chat.

Why Visit Morocco

Following the devasting earthquake, we are inspired and humbled by the Berber people in the High Atlas Mountains as they pulled together to rebuild their infrastructure, houses, communities and lives. Together with the tremendous support from our Adventurous Ewe community, we rallied to provide a helpful amount of kit donations for the people affected by this earthquake in the remote mountain villages. We felt it was the very least we could do given the support and warm hospitality these villages have always provided to us over the many years. Their deep passion for the High Atlas Mountains, extensive knowledge of the region, welcoming spirit and heartwarming friendships are invaluable. The sense of togetherness runs deep. From this we strongly encourage you to experience a land of timeless beauty, rich culture and warm hospitality, where you can step into another world that is only a short hop from the UK and support the remote communities as they continue to rebuild their lives.

Eve Branson Foundation

Earlier this year we were delighted to take one of our Mt Toubkal trekking teams to visit the Tamgounssi Weaving Centre where they observed first-hand the positive impact of The Eve Branson Foundation in the High Atlas Mountain communities. Meeting Fatima, the Manager of the EBF, the team witnessed local women being trained in weaving, rug-making, and embroidery. We were all enthralled by the quality of the handicrafts from hand-made scarfs, shawls, bags and so much more. These programs, provided free of charge, aim to empower individuals of all ages with access to teaching, materials, and equipment five days a week. The ultimate goal is to create high-quality handmade crafts that blend traditional designs with contemporary Moroccan style, generating a sustainable income by selling these items to visitors.

The Toubkal team were also treated to a visit of the Community & Study Centre for young people aged 6 to 18. Located near the former secondary school in Asni, the study centre project has been part of the EBF’s efforts to rebuild after last year’s devasting earthquake. Our local tour operator together with the community have played a pivotal role in this reconstruction alongside the EBF. Adjacent to the centre, temporary school tarpaulins have been set up, relocating primary school children, and plans are in motion for a new playground for the damaged crèche at Tifaouine. Here we gifted arts and crafts items to support pre-school and primary school children, including those currently living in tents without access to schooling.

Visit Morocco | Toubkal

This powerful experience laid a humbling and emotive foundation for the team’s Mt Toubkal trek and overall visit to the High Atlas Mountain region. We wish to thank all the people of this area who shape our travel experiences and who are integral in making adventure travel the enriching journey that it is. From the local leaders, guesthouse staff, partners, suppliers, drivers and cooks and to the local artisans crafting items to sell to support their families and so, so much more. We warmly invite you to be part of this heartwarming experience, experience everything the High Atlas Mountain region has to offer and help support the wonderful rural communities.

Training for a Mountain Trip: Jennifer Doohan https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/training-for-a-mountain-trip/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 17:12:37 +0000 https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/?p=14353

Training for a Mountain Trip |

By Jennifer Doohan

Adventure is calling and you’ve mustered up the courage to hit the ‘Book Now’ button – amazing! So now what? Ah yes – training! Bookmark this blog for some top tips or inspiration on the lead up to your adventure!

But first, meet Jennifer Doohan, our esteemed guest blogger, who’s no stranger to the beckoning heights of mountain peaks and the preparation that leads to them. Having conquered the mighty Mt Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, with Adventurous Ewe, and numerous other summits during her time in Italy, Jennifer’s spirit for elevation is as unyielding as it is inspiring. Not only does she navigate the rocky ascents by boots and endures extensive cycling journeys, but she also brings balance and strength to her adventures through her practice as a Functional Yoga Instructor. Join her as she shares her insights and experiences on behalf of AE in “Training for a Mountain” – a guide that promises to elevate your physical preparation to new heights.

Timing

First things first, how far away is the trek? Generally speaking three months of consistent training 2-3 times per week is sufficient to prepare for a mountain trip, depending on your current fitness and experience level.

Do I need to join a gym?

No,  but it can help as an external motivator. Working on your strength & mobility whatever your current condition or location is a big YES. More on that to follow!

Distance and Elevation

You said YES to a mountain adventure, so we’re guessing you like going up! Your training should incorporate aerobic, endurance building exercises and some long consecutive hikes. For a detailed breakdown of what to expect check out your personal Adventurous Ewe travel app or the Map & Itinerary section on the website – Georgia Trek. On your training walks aim for similar distances and elevation. If you struggle to find big elevation locally to you, plan in a few long hikes in more mountainous areas of the UK – also the perfect opportunity to test and get used to any new kit.

Kit

Time of year will play a big role in what you squeeze into your backpack. We recommend investing in a decent pair of walking poles. In terms of efficiency of movement you can get your arms involved on the ascent, and on the descent feel more stable and protect your knees too! They take a bit of practice to walk with so here’s a video to help you on your way.

Boots. Arguably one of the most important pieces of your kit! Try to train in the boots you will wear as much as possible. Take them to the stair master in the gym – every experience helps you to learn  more about your kit and how your body responds to it.

Your feet are an important consideration too, pre-taping ‘hotspot’ areas created by your boots can prevent blisters from forming.  Checkout Zinc Oxide tape options like RockTape, Leukoplast etc… For five star foot care most outdoor shops will offer a custom innersole service, giving you personalised foot and arch support. This helps with overall posture on the mountain so you can walk without being distracted by any niggles, especially with a heavy pack on your back.

Speaking of backpacks – another top tip is to train with a fully loaded pack. This will get your body out of its comfort zone, and your spine used to working under a weight which will mean an easier more enjoyable trip!

Climb Yala Peak

Fitness

What goes up must come down and it’s good to get your big muscle groups – glutes and thighs, as well as your knees and ankles strong and accustomed to longer ascents and descents.

Think compound* movements such as squats and lunges. These can be done at home or in the gym. The advantage of the gym is the ability to progressively overload the muscles with a bigger range of free weights and static machines.

Appropriate gym equipment to use would a Stair stepper machine, this will improve both cardio and lower body strength. For walking pole practice a ski-erg can be a good go-to piece of equipment too, providing an excellent cardiovascular workout.

If you are seeking a gentler more mindful approach to fitness then a yoga workout can increase your strength in different ways, along with your mobility! It also comes with the benefit of helping you to manage the stressors of everyday life.

Find out more about out training plans here.

Social Workout Ideas

At Adventurous Ewe we understand that travelling with people you have never met before can be a big part of the challenge too. So we provide the opportunity to meet your fellow adventurers during an online workout with fitness & Yoga Teacher Jennifer. This can help with the mental preparation involved in a new challenge and also provide support and motivation too!

Greenland Hiking Guide: Expert Tips for Your Next Adventure https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/greenland-hiking-guide-expert-tips-for-your-next-adventure/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 11:39:37 +0000 https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/?p=14318

Greenland Hiking Guide:

Expert Tips for Your Next Adventure

Venturing deep into the remote fjord system of Southern Greenland, Jim, Founder & Director of Adventurous Ewe, joined forces with two Indigenous Greenlandic Guides to sculpt a journey unlike any other. Through their collective expertise, they’ve mapped an exclusive expedition through some of this vast island’s remote and untouched landscapes. Jim shares his invaluable insights below, preparing you for an adventure that promises to be nothing short of the journey of a lifetime.

Firstly, why go

‘When you’ve seen the world there’s always Greenland’ goes the old travellers’ saying. But why wait till then? Greenland is not a cheap destination, but few places combine such magnificent scenery, such clarity of light and such raw power of nature. Picture yourself traversing the pristine, ice-sculpted landscapes, where the silence is broken only by the distant roar of calving glaciers, the whistle of the wind and the gentle water lapping on the shore.

Moreover, with a new international airport set to open its doors in November 2024, offering direct flights from Europe and North America, Greenland’s allure is only set to rise. If you’re drawn to the vast, wild beauty of dramatic landscapes, icy fjords, and untouched wilderness, come with us this August for an unforgettable journey.

Join expert local guides

Our local guides are at the centre of this expedition and come from Aasiaat and Maniitsoq in Greenland. We believe that local guides are the key to unlocking the true essence of a destination. The deep-rooted understanding of the terrain, culture, and hidden gems allow us to curate meaningful journeys that go beyond the ordinary. When you embark on this expedition, you won’t just be shown around — you’ll be guided by experienced locals who are passionate about sharing their rich knowledge and love for their homeland. Plus you’ll get to enjoy the best camp coffee in the world spiced up with plenty of local stories and learn the tradition way of living off the land and sea.

Benefit of small group travel

We are inherently a responsible travel operator. Small group sizes allow us to visit a destination and local communities, not invade, and to be welcomed back time and time again. We pride ourselves on this commitment.

We focus on small groups with low guide ratio as we value the personal relationships and more authentic way of travel. You’ll not only witness extraordinary landscapes on this expedition, but also forge long-lasting friendships and gain a profound understanding of the culture and people of Greenland.

When to go

Greenland, a colossal island, experiences wide-ranging seasonal and geographical shifts, resulting in weather that is constantly shifting and unpredictable throughout the year. This unpredictability enhances the expedition’s raw and unfiltered essence.

For our remote expeditions the Greenlandic summer is more suitable. This period, from May to September, promises more hours of daylight.

Jim’s insider scoop

Check out some top tips below to help with your Greenlandic adventure…

  • Pack Light, Pack Right: The weather can be unpredictable. Layering is key—thermal base layers, a waterproof shell, and a sturdy pair of boots. And don’t forget your camera; the landscapes are relentlessly photogenic.
  • Embrace the daylight hours: With travelling in the Summer months, your adventure doesn’t stop when the clock hits ‘pm.’ Whether it’s kayaking through icebergs or trekking across the tundra, the days are yours to explore more.
  • Cultural Connections: Greenland’s heart beats through its communities. Take time to listen to the stories of the locals, taste the traditional cuisine, and understand the deep connection they have with the land.
  • Explore the Greenland National Museum & Archives in Nuuk: Immerse yourself in the rich and elusive intangible cultural heritage, and delve into the 4,500-year history of Greenland to deepen your understanding of this remarkable region.
  • It’s all about the Inuits: Note that the word Eskimo is considered an inappropriate term; Inuit is preferred.
  • Money matters: Most places accept card payments or digital wallets like ApplePay, so there’s little need to carry much cash.
  • Raise a toast: Bring along a small bottle of your favourite drink and cap off a remarkable day in nature with a toast, chilled by ancient glacial ice.

8 Essential Packing Tips for Greenland:

  1. Always Have Your Down Jacket Within Reach: The unpredictable weather in Greenland means temperatures can shift dramatically. Keep your down jacket close to adapt quickly and stay comfortable.
  2. Use Colour-Coded Dry Bags for Organisation: Sort your kit into coloured dry bags. This method is efficient for finding items and ensures everything stays dry and organised.
  3. Pack Heavy Gear at the Bottom: For better balance and to minimise back strain, place denser items, such as your sleeping bag, at the bottom of your pack.
  4. Bring your complimentary Water-to-Go Bottle: When you depart on this expedition, you’ll receive a free AE WTG bottle to help eliminate our single use plastic footprint in Greenland and give you the chance to enjoy freshly sourced water, safely.
  5. Adjust Your Backpack Properly: This is a self-sufficient expedition whereby you’ll carry all your own kit, tents, food and cooking equipment. A well-fitted backpack is key to avoiding discomfort during your treks across Greenland’s vast landscapes.
  6. Choose Layered Clothing with Zippers: For easy and quick temperature control, opt for clothing that layers well and includes zippers.
  7. Don’t Skimp on Quality Socks: Good-quality socks are a must for keeping your feet protected, warm, and comfortable as you explore the rugged terrain of Greenland.
  8. Train and trek with poles: Bring trekking poles to assist with navigating the uneven terrain. With traversing entirely off the beaten path, following only animal trails, trekking poles will provide essential support and stability.

Top tips for camping

Wild camping in Greenland offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the world’s last great wildernesses. Here’s Jim’s top tips to make your experience one to remember for the right reasons:

  1. Respect the Environment: Always follow the ‘Pack in, Pack out, Leave No Trace principle!  Minimise your impact by taking all litter with you and using small amounts of biodegradable soap for washing. Plus you’ll set up camp at least 200 meters away from water sources to protect local wildlife and water quality.
  2. Be Prepared for All Weather: The weather in Greenland can change swiftly. Ensure your tent is properly erected and secure. Plus keep what you need for during the evenings at hand ie. water-proofs, beanie, head torch, down jacket.
  3. Keep electrical kit warm: All camera, mobile phone, batteries, head torch warm at night (in sleeping bag).
  4. Pillow talk: Use down jacket as a pillow, stuff it inside your sleeping back cover. Plus you know where it is when you need to get up at night.
  5. Sleep tips: Always sleep with your head at the higher end of the tent.
  6. Where to store your kit bag: Put your kit bag at your feet to stop you sliding down your sleeping mat if you’re on a slight slope.
  7. Next day: Have your trek clothes at the top of your bag or even in the bottom of your sleeping bag, ready for the next day.
  8. Any rubbish: Bring some small paper bags to dispose of any rubbish in your tent. Take these back with you for disposal/recycle in Nuuk.
  9. Evenings in camp: Bring a pack of cards, book, head-phones, etc.
  10. Keep warm: Have a spare set of warm clothes and shoes to change into after a day of trekking.
  11. Don’t forget to check out the night skies in camp too: Download a star gazing app so you can identify stars, constellations, planets, comets and satellites.

Learn some Greenlandic

Whenever you travel to a new country, it is always a polite gesture to learn at least a few words in the local language. Greenlandic belongs to the Inuit family of languages. It is a ‘polysynthetic’ language, which means that words are formed with a root, one or more affixes and a suffix. A Greenlandic word can thus be very long and can mean what corresponds to a whole sentence in other languages. Here’s some useful words to help add to your Greenland experience:

Salutations and Greetings in Greenlandic

Aluu = Hello

Baj = Bye

Kumoorn = Good morning

Kutaa = Good day

Kunaat = Good night

Takuss’ = See you later

The exception is Takuss’ (shortened from Takussaagut) – which means “see you later”. This is something you’ll hear a lot!

Welcome – Tikilluarit

Saying “yes” and “no” is also fairly simple in Greenlandic:

    Yes = Aap

    No = Naamik

Qujanaq = thank you. This is often shortened to Qujan (thanks) and the person you say it to will probably reply with Illillu (“you’re welcome”).

Finally, as you travel around Greenland, you will want a word to exclaim at all you are seeing and experiencing. The best option: Torrak!, which means “awesome” in English.

One of Jim’s top highlights

Nature watching in Greenland is off-the-chart amazing! On the final day of the expedition there’s the option to paddleboard or kayak. Here you’ll find yourself, navigating through a maze of icebergs, marvelling at their diverse shapes and colours, from a safe distance. And then there’s the wildlife. This breath-taking scenery is enveloped by iceberg-dotted seas, crystal-clear blue skies, untouched landscapes, and rugged mountains, creating one of the most powerful punches of natural drama I’ve ever seen.

So get ready to embark on a journey to the heart of the Arctic with Adventurous Ewe’s Greenland Wilderness Adventure. This is not just a trip; it’s a human powered journey into the wild. Kungsleden: Arctic Advice

8 Packing Tips:

  1. Keep your down jacket handy: The Arctic climate can change rapidly, so having your down jacket accessible ensures you can adjust to temperature shifts swiftly.
  2. Colour-coded dry bags: Organise your gear in colored dry bags. This system saves time and keeps your belongings dry and sorted.
  3. Pack heavy items low: Place heavier items, like your sleeping bag, towards the bottom of your backpack to maintain balance and reduce strain.
  4. Internal bottle storage: Prevent your water from freezing by storing bottles inside your backpack, not in external holders.
  5. Proper rucksack adjustment: Ensure your backpack is fitted correctly to avoid discomfort.
  6. Layers with zips: Opt for layered clothing with zips for easy temperature regulation
  7. Invest in good socks: Wear high-quality socks for foot protection, comfiness and warmth.
  8. Multi-functional water bottle: Use a bottle in which you can fill it with boiling water at night, place it in one of your thick socks and put it in your sleeping bag for a ready-made hot water bottle and then drinking water in the morning.

Preparing for the Arctic

Layering tips:

Think like an onion!

Thinking like an onion means dressing in layers so that you can put them on and peel them off when you need to. One of the most important ways to achieve a successful (and enjoyable) snowshoe adventure is to manage your body temperature and prevent yourself from sweatingSweating causes you to become dangerously cold even when you stop for short rest breaks. To keep yourself dry, you’ll want to shed layers as you heat up, thus staying slightly cool but not cold while walking. When you stop for a break, immediately put your warm layers/down jacket back on and save all that body heat you’ve rightfully earned. By adjusting layers for your trekking level and the weather, you can manage to stay comfortable and dry all day.

Abi’s tip: Be bold, start cold! If you’re comfortable when you’re standing around, take off one layer prior to starting out. This will prevent you from getting too hot 10minutes down the way.

Best Treats to Pack:

  1. Snack along the track: It’s crucial to bring along enough water and snacks like chocolate and dried fruit while snowshoeing, as it can be physically demanding. The cold weather often leads to increased calorie expenditure, necessitating regular refreshment. Munch away.
  2. Electrolytes: Flavor your water and stay hydrated.
  3. Hot Chocolate Sachet: A comforting treat after a day in the cold.
  4. A Fun Card Game: Lightweight entertainment for downtime.

Top 5 Snowshoeing Tips:

Snowshoes are designed to make walking over snow much easier, which can often be breakable, deep or powdery. The width of the snowshoe distributes your weight over a wider “footprint” or area and move with significantly less effort than you would in normal boots. The snowshoes also have “teeth” on the outside and a small crampon-like base under your foot to “bite into the snow”. This makes it easier for us to access hard-to-reach vantage points and allowing for easier exploration of our landing spots.

  1. Adopt the cowboy walk: A wider stance prevents stepping on the frames, making it easier to maneuver.
  2. Move slow and steady: It’s best to move at a slow and steady pace to avoid building up a sweat, particularly when moving uphill. When going downhill, take smaller steps to let the snowshoes do the work and use your poles for balance.
  3. Pole position: When using poles, keep your elbows at right angles for optimal support.
  4. Invest in good boots: As the name suggests, it’s cold in the Arctic. Insulated, waterproof winter boots with higher ankle support, thick soles and rubber or leather uppers are ideal. Eg. Salomon Toundra Pro boots or The North Face Chillkat snow boots. Both available in mens and womens makes.
  5. Break-In your boots: Use the boots you plan to snowshoe in beforehand to avoid discomfort during the expedition.

Top Tips for Fetching Water from Ice Wells:

  1. Use the pulk: The pulk (sled) makes transporting water containers easier. Though make sure you attach the container to the pulk down before heading uphill to prevent it sliding back down the hill (trust me, it has happened)!
  2. Insulated water-proof gloves are essential: Protect your hands from the cold with insulated gloves. I recommend Hestra Alpine or Mountaineering gloves.
  3. Teamwork: Fetching water is easier and safer with a buddy.
  4. Drag, don’t carry: It’s more efficient and less strenuous to drag containers back to your mountain hut.
  5. Savor the taste of fresh water: fully valuing its origin and the effort you put into fetching it.

  3. Night visit and guided tour at STF Aurora Sky Station. Take the chairlift and visit Aurora Sky Station

So without further delay, here’s a few words from our new Adventure Travel Consultant, Jenny….

“Hello! I’m Jenny✋🏻and I’m so excited to be welcomed into the Adventurous Ewe family! What an honour. I’ll be working behind the Adventurous Ewe scenes with Jim and Sue, consulting on all existing business and customer support processes 💻. I have a huge passion for improving operating models and customer satisfaction; an 11-year career has seen me successfully launch and manage business processes, projects and products on a global scale 🌍. Focused on customer relationship transformation and supporting sustainable growth, I am really excited to get stuck in. I’m particularly keen to tap into our social and marketing journey more to expand our reach to those who might not know about such authentic, sustainable adventure travel options through Adventurous Ewe 🫶🌱🗺.

My friends would say I’m an adventure seeking fiend, with a love for hiking and sailing 🥾⛵. I spend most of my time in nature and most weekends I’ll be spotted in the Scottish mountains or hiking a Wainwright with my equally adventurous dog Maya 🐶. Hitting all 214 Wainwright fells is still pending, however, watch this space.

Having recently crewed in the 2023/24 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race ocean racing around Australia (which is how I met Sue! And what an exhilarating journey!) I’m super keen to continue to expand my ocean sailing capabilities, and get more women involved too (because it’s an incredible experience). I also sailed a 68ft yacht to the Arctic Circle with Skirr on their first ever expedition, passing 66 degrees north and exploring the wonders of Greenland and Iceland – epic!

Next adventure awaits…let’s make 2024 a year of exploring; what adventures are you thinking about doing? 👀👀 Let me know, and maybe I’ll join you.😉

So please join us in welcoming Jenny. We’re thrilled to have her (and Maya) aboard our small yet super passionate and personable team.
