Essential Information

Weather
The weather during the Spring/Autumn months is generally sunny days and cold nights.  However, conditions can change very quickly in the mountains. What can start out as a good day can soon become very poor.  It is very important to be well equipped and prepared for all conditions. However the scenery is simply stunning, the beech and larch woods cloaked in the golden hues of Spring/Autumn. The mountains should be free of snow and all summits should be accessible, however, be snow can fall in the mountains at any time of the year and lie for several days.

Trekking in the mountains can be precarious and although we take important steps to manage and minimise this risk, we can never eradicate it altogether. Your Mountain Guide reserves the right to change the itinerary at any time should the conditions require it. This may be for a variety of reasons – climatic, political, physical or other. In these circumstances we will make the best alternative arrangements possible that maintain the integrity of the original itinerary.

Essential Information

Weather & Safety
In common with other tropical countries, Ecuador does not experience the four seasons known in other parts of the world. Instead there are wet and dry seasons. The best months for climbing are from October through to April. During summer (June, July & August), the winds tend to be very strong which impacts on climbing and your expedition experience. However, conditions can change very quickly in the mountains. What can start out as a good day can soon become very poor.  It is very important to be well equipped and prepared for all conditions.

Mountaineering can be dangerous and although we take important steps to manage and minimise this risk we can never eradicate it altogether. The main danger is injury from avalanche or falling then sliding down a snow slope.
Although the guides can assist you in becoming accustomed to the use of ice axes and crampons the trip is not a winter skills training course. If you have not used ice axes or crampons before it is essential that you feel confident in picking up the necessary skills.

Safety
Adventurous Ewe prioritises the safety of all of their trekkers and staff, and as such have developed a thorough safety management system. This encompasses comprehensive risk assessments and procedures together with audits of all aspects of your challenge from vehicles to accommodation to the trek activities. Your health and safety is our top priority.

In terms of your Cotopaxi traverse, there are some important points outlined below:

  • This expedition involves going to very high altitude. During the course of your trip you will be spending at least one night above 4,000 metres and trekking above 5,000 metres. Before joining this expedition, you should read visit this website to gain a better understanding of acclimatisation and altitude sickness: traveldoctor.co.uk/altitude.htm. Unless you have previous experience of trekking above 4,000 metres you should consult Adventurous Ewe before embarking on this expedition. On this trip we carry a portable altitude chamber (PAC-bag) and/or bottled oxygen for use in emergencies.

Health
All our guides IGMFA qualified and first aid trained and carry fully equipped medical kits for serious medical emergencies. There are no compulsory vaccinations for Slovenia but we recommend you consult your GP before departure. A good level of fitness is required for this trek.

It is your responsibility to have the correct personal documents and to obtain your own visa, if one is necessary. The information is primarily for UK passport holders, and other nationalities should check with their relevant embassies. Unusually for the Alps, mountain rescue is free in Slovenia unless you are shown to have been ill-prepared or unduly negligent, in which case charges can be extremely high. Mountain rescue teams are very well organised. There is a network of 17 bases around Slovenia, and a helicopter with an experienced team on board is on duty every weekend from June to September.

Georgia: Georgia’s rich culture and amazingly diverse landscapes make it an ideal destination for anyone loving nature, remote adventure and history on the grandest of scales. From its green valleys spread with vineyards to its old churches & watchtowers perched amidst incredible mountain scenery and to remote mountain trails winding through ancient villages, Georgia known as the Gem of the Caucasus.

Sandwiched between Russia to the north, Turkey & Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the southeast, and on the coast of the Black Sea, Georgia is home to some of Europe’s highest mountain peaks. Modern archaeological evidence suggests that Georgia is also the oldest winemaking country in the world, with some wine samples dating back 8,000 years. To support this rich heritage, Georgia’s cities and countryside are complete with medieval churches and monasteries, several of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Trek Georgia : On this unique 6-day point to point trek, you’ll experience two of the ancient Caucasus mountain regions, Tusheti and Khevsureti. Your route takes you through narrow valleys and deep gorges, along the rushing river Aragvi, past ancient villages and crossing epic mountain passes as Bear Cross Pass at 2,600m Atsunta Pass at 3431m, one of the highest passes of Georgia.

Traversing across ridges with extensive views, you’ll descend through flower-filled mountain pastures into steep-sided and forested valleys and encountering fortified medieval villages Mutso and Shatili. This is Georgia’s most traditional region, home to animist shrines, friendly villages, hidden churches and impressive stone-built defensive towers. The villages on this trek are not just villages. They are living, breathing archeological sites. They are centuries old — many of them nestled within the ruins of old fortresses and towers.

After your time in the mountains and remote wild camps, you’ll gain a greater understanding of this fascinating country, it’s traditions and culture. Plus, there’s time to further explore Tbilisi and in the nearby town of Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former Georgian capital.
